10 Frame:
# 1: Jerry Mcguire " You complete me"
Since there are 2 ten frames, one will be for you and one for your child. You say a number, such as , "6" then your child looks at their 10 frame and says what number you have to add to 6 to get 10 ( or 20), it goes without saying that they can use their flash light OR laser pen to show their thinking . When they say the correct number to get to 10 or 20 , you say: " You complete me". Sounds sillly but kids love it!
# 2: How are you doing that?
This is a great time to experiment with your child. Ask your child an addition or subtraction problem. How did they get their answer? Talk through it. You may see where they are making mistakes or learn a new way of thinking about numbers!
Here is an example: My son might say 20-7 so I take my flashlight or lazer light and shine it on a row of 5 then another 5 for ten, then another five for 15....there is only 5 left and I need 7 so I will count 2 ones backward to get 13.
# 3: Know one...know three for free!
If you know one then you know three . Don't forget! If you are subtracting 5 from 7 and get 2 then, you already know.... 2 + 5 = 7, 5 + 2 = 7 and 7 – 2 = 5
Once you get an answer to an addition or subtraction problem see how fast you can say the related fact families.
This is a good start....chances are you and your child will come up with even better games!
