5th Grade Math: Division Facts

If your child does not have a specific 5th grade math skill below, click on a specific division facts skill for ideas to teach your child. Teaching ideas are for busy parents to integrate throughout the day.

Division:


Know how to divide single digits 1-30 with and without remainders and powers of ten: 10, 100, 1000.


Know how to write and use the division algorithm (the actual division equation.


Your child should be able to use a strategy to break these problems apart and quickly get an answer. For example:34/12... I know that division is backwards multiplication so I am thinking 12x ? =34.. or repeated subtraction...how many times do I add 12 to get close to 34?


Choose an appropriate strategy and equation for division story problems.


Explain how they got the answer. Example: 63/8... I thought 8x?=63... I know that 8x8=64 and that is over 64 so I have to go with 7x8=56 and there will be 7 left over. The answer is 7r7.

Fifth grade math involves often-confusing concepts including multiplication and division. Although students may have been introduced to these concepts before, they are now expected to master these skills before moving on to more advanced math like algebra and geometry in middle school.


A little background knowledge will make it much easier to help your child understand division in 5th grade math. Here are a few terms that you may remember or learn:
Dividend is divided by a divisor to find a quotient.

In the following equation, 312 is the dividend, 12 is the divisor and 26 is the quotient. 312/12 = 26

Your child should know and be able to explain that they need to fit the divisor into the dividend as close as possible without going over. For example, 7 fits into 50, 7 times with one left over.
