1st Grade Multiplication Games

*If your child does not have a specific 1st grade math skill below, click on a specific multiplication facts skill for math games and activities to teach your child.*

Dear Parent,
Developing these multiplication skills in 1st grade math builds a strong foundation for more advanced multiplication. Here are some extras that will benefit your child in the long run:

1. Although not required for 1st grade math, your child can learn about the commutative multiplication property; which states that the order of the numbers does not effect the product. For example, 3 crackers and 2 groups of those crackers is the same as 2 crackers and 3 groups of those crackers. Ex: Commutative Property: a x b = b x a

2. Help your child make the connection between multiplication facts and repeated addition. For example, if you have 4 crackers and 3 groups of those crackers you can express it as 4+4+4=12. Ex: 4x3=12 OR 4+4+4=12

3. Teach your first-grader about the concept of multiplying a number by one or zero. Every number that is multiplied by zero equals zero , while any number multiplied by one will be equal to itself. Your child will love acting like a big kid and multiplying huge numbers by 0. Ex. 1,000,000 x 0= 0

4. One of the most critical points to remember is that children learn in a variety of ways, and there’s no one “right” way to learn. The beauty of parents working with their child is that you will begin to see how your child best responds to learning.

* Many people, believe that multiplication is inappropriate to teach to first graders. Keep in mind that first graders need to be developing skills that later will help them understand and successfully multiply all kinds of numbers. This doesn't mean we are drilling first graders with multiplication flashcards, instead we are teaching basic skills to be built on later.
