4th grade math subtraction:
Subtract equations up to three digits and powers of ten: 10,100,1000(example: 35-21 =14 and 100-35 =65).
Mentally subtract 3 (or more) digits.
Take apart numbers according to place value 10, 100, and 1000.
Create subtraction problems and write matching equations. (example: 25 friends in a park and 7 got lost, how many left?......25-7 =18)
Round/Estimate numbers to the nearest 10,100,1000.
Dear Parent,
Do these words sound familiar to you:Computation/Calculation?
By 4th grade children are expected to answer more complex problems using their knowledge of the number system. The definition of Computation/Calculation is: using knowledge of basic facts and concepts to calculate an answer to an equation. Children often make errors when computing because they misread signs, carry numbers incorrectly, may not write numerals clearly enough or in the correct column. These students often struggle, especially in elementary school, where basic computation and "right answers" are stressed.
If your child has a good sense of how numbers work, computation becomes so much easier. Hard work pays off! For example, if I am subtracting 192-158, I can round 192 to 200, and 158 to 160..mentally subtract them and get 40. So, after I find my answer I will know if I am in the ballpark because I know the answer is somewhere around 40. Some children will end up with an answer to this problem of 111 and move on without realizing they are way off. Being able to estimate an answer and then perform the operation is a focus in 4th grade math.
Yours Truly,
The Crazy Math Mom
