Subtraction Games
2nd Grade Math Subtraction:
If your child does not have a specific 2nd grade math skill below, click on a specific skill for ideas to teach your child.
Count and Write numbers to 1000
Count fluently forwards and backwards 1-100
Write/Solve subtraction facts between 1 and 20.
Use these strategies:
Subtract 0 (10-0 =10)
Counting back by 1, 2, or 3
Twins (5-5 =0)
Close to Doubles (6-5 =1)
Friendly Ten (17-9=8) This strategy involves making one of the numbers a 10 and subtracting the numbers. So, if I add 1 to 9 I get 10. I have 17 - 10. This is 7! Now I have to add the 1 I added to the 9 , to the answer. 7 + 1= 8.
Half facts (10-5 =5)
Know what fact families are, explain how addition and subtraction are related (example: If 10-4=6 then 6+4=10).
Understand and explain the "communicative property" (ex. 5+2=7, 2+5=7, 7-2=5, 7-5=2; explain that the order doesn't matter).
Write and solve subtraction story problems using the subtraction strategies

What is math?
Those who do not appreciate math are those who do not understand what math is all about. That is why math needs to be understood by all. Simply put, math is all about solving problems. Now...who doesn't need to know that?
Why should I learn subtraction?
As a parent you will have many chances to show your children how subtraction effects our lives. Subtraction saves time when calculating the change you should receive at a store; finding how many more miles, hours, or minutes are left on a trip; finding how many snacks will be left after they share some with a friend; or finding how many days, weeks, or months are left until their birthdays or special holidays. Cooks use subtraction to change or create a recipe they will make. Vacationers use math to plan length and times of their vacation. Even homeowners use subtraction to determine the cost of materials and leftovers when doing project.
You can make a difference in the way your child feels about math!
