Count forward and backward to 100- Part 2
(There are 2 parts to counting because it is an essential skill to mastering addition facts)
Start with 1-30 the work up to 100. Counting backwards is hard. For example to go from 30 to 29, kids need to not only think that the twenties come before the thirties, but also to go to 29 rather than just 20.
FYI: counting backwards is hard but, an essential skill to learning addition. For example, to go from 30 to 29, kids need to not only think that the twenties come before the thirties, but also to go to 29 rather than just 20.
**It is important mentioning that counting backwards is extremely important...just as important to counting forwards...this is often overlooked!**
1. Walk backwards while counting backwards. Spend a week walking up the stairs (anywhere you are) backwards while counting backwards.
*Remind your kids when you get to a set of stairs; stop and say "backwards".*
2. Number BINGO: Find the missing number... count forward and backwards and clap instead of saying one number...do they know what it is? For example, 98, 97, 96, 95, clap , 93, 92, 91 (this is like the song BINGO because you leave one number out then two then three etc).
3. Use a 100's chart. Count forward and backwards by 1's, 5's, and 10's.

4. Play tons of games with the 100 chart.
WARNING- DO NOT OVERLOOK:
* You would not believe the deep mathmatical understanding your child will gain while working with a 100 chart.
Many teachers are astonished when they see the power that lies in the 100 chart.
Counting backwards is always so hard, thank you for giving me permission to have my child only count backward a few numbers at a time. We start at a huge number! It makes it alot of fun.
