Addition Games that will teach your child to master:
Addition Facts 1-100
ONCE YOUR CHILD HAS MASTER THEIR BASIC FACTS 1-20 USING DIFFERENT STRATEGIES , THEN THEY ARE READY TO USE THOSE STRATEGIES TO SOLVE MORE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS!
NOTE: THE FOCUS HERE IS FOR CHILDREN TO MENTALLY ADD PROBLEMS AND DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF PLACE VALUE. THIS SKILL IS ESSENTIAL AS YOUR CHILD PROGRESSES IN MATH.
This is only accomplished by practice! For example:35+22......
1. A child who understands place value might: start at 35 and add 2 groups of ten: 45, 55, then 2 more for 57.
2. or... I might add 30 and 20 which is like adding 2+3 and adding zero..so I get 50; then add the 5 and 2 ones for 7, so 50+7=57.
3. I might add each column starting in the ones ...5+2 ( count forward 2 to get 7) write the 7 in the ones column. Then, add 3+2 in the tens column ( count forward 2 ) for 5, write that in the tens place for a total of 57. They will need to carry the tens digit in more complex problems.
4. Better Yet: let your child invent their own strategy and explain it to you. You might ask " Does it work every time? ", and or " Is it quick?", and/or " Is it practical to use?".
Give your child 1 or 2 problems a day for a few weeks......
If your child is having trouble:
Post a 100 chart and a 300 chart (download below). As you ask addition and subtraction questions use the chart. Your child will be able to visually see ones, tens, and hundreds places.
