Division Games

Division games to master:               4's

Your child should know their 4's (multiplication facts). It is vital that they know these multiplication facts because they will be a huge help in division.

First, practice reading multiplication / division problems and rewrite them into a division problem. So, 6 x 4 = 24 becomes 24 / 4 = 6.

There are several strategies for solving any division problems with the divisor of 4:

The best way to explain is to show an example: 36 / 4

(1). Look at the Divisor: By looking at the divisor you know this is a 4 fact.

(2). Skip Counting: I might skip count and realize that I have to skip count by 4's- 9 times to get to 36.

(3). Use a Strategy: I might use the same rule as I used for dividing by two ( divide the number in half ) - and do it twice. If you want to divide 36 by 4, you simply halve 36 (which is 18) and then halve that number (which, in this case, is 9). So: 36 / 4 = 9.

Dividing by 4 secrets:

  1. Are the last two digits in your number divisible by 4?
  2. If so, the number is too!
  3. For example: 358912 ends in 12 which is divisible by 4, thus so is 358912.
