Multiplication Games that teach your child to:
Count by 2's, 4's, 5's, and 10's to 1000 starting at any given number
Kids need to be able to count to 100 using a strategy that is faster that counting by 1's.
1. It is easiest to teach this with money. Pennies, nickels, and dimes are so great because you can use them to count by 1's, 5's, 10's. How many pennies do you need to get to 100? how about nickels, how about dimes?
2. Whenever there is an opportunity to count by 2's, 5's, and 10's take advantage of it.
Great opportunities:
You can count by 2's everyday...how many pairs of shoes are in this room? in the car? How many sets of eyes or ears are in the line at the bank?
You can count by 5's....look at the clock and count by fives (this will help when your child starts multiplying). Later these become known as "Clock Facts"
If you are waiting or trying to pass time, use the calculator on your phone. You can pick a certain number. Ask your child to skip count by 5's (or any number you choose) to get to the number you chose. Have them keep track of how many times they have to add 5 (or any number you choose) to get to the number. To shake it up a bit, before they use the calculator try to make a guess at how many times you will have to add to get to the number, is anyone close?
Count by 10's.....this is an easy one because our whole number system is based on 10. You can count fingers and toes. Simple multiplication games can be played while driving:
Count by 10's to measure some type of distance when were driving. If the kids want to know how much longer until we get there- we count by tens until we get there. (obviously, we do this for short distances-how much longer until we get to the store? soccer practice? etc.)
3. Use a hundred chart to regularly count by 2's. 5's, 10's. You can have your child color in the 2's, 5's 10's.
