Multiplication Games that will teach your child to:
Write and solve repeated addition
Repeated addition is a tool to use when learning the concept of multiplication. This is important..because your child will get the idea that when you add a number multiple times it takes a long time. One solution to adding up numbers all day..... is to multiply.
Many argue that repeated addition is not the same as multiplication. For our purposes it serves as a great tool. Repeated addition does give the correct answer for any multiplication of whole numbers.
For example.....you have 5 pairs of shoes you could add 2+2+2+2+2=10. You could also say the 2 x 5= 10.
Multiplication Games:
1. Pick a number....any number. Looking at a 100 Chart, pick a number, keep it in your head. Ask your child to guess the number by jumping by 2's, 5's, or 10's. As your child is jumping, make it fun by saying "hotter and colder" as they approach the number you previously chose.
2. Skip on a numberline. Physically draw a numberline with sidewalk chalk on the ground. Ask your child to skip, take giant steps, hop, etc. by 2's, 4's, 5's, etc. until they get to the end of the numberline.
3. Visualize: Count by your associations: Your child has learned the Doubles strategy by making associations ( if your following this website). So, if you child thinks of an octopus (8 legs) and another octopus (8 more legs) it is 16, now add another octopus, and another. Keeping track on paper is perfectly fine, however work toward mentally adding them up.
8 +8 +8 +8= 32
4. Mother May I : Play the traditional game " Mother May I". Your child can say:"Mother may I take 3 steps" and you respond " Yes you may take 3 steps...then, you can add how many times they should take 3 steps". Next, your child takes 3 steps ( and does it 4 times). When he/she gets to you they win and become the "Mother".
