Multiplication Games

Multiplication games that will teach your child to:

Understand and explain the "Communitive Property" of multiplication.

Often, it is not evident to children that the order in which the numbers of a multiplication sentence does not change the solution.

For example, at first children are not aware that 5 groups of 9 and 9 groups of 5 are the same. One method that can be used to help children see this property is the use of arrays. (math researcher, Van de Walle and Folk 130).

Array: In math, an array is an orderly arrangement, often in rows, columns or a matrix. Arrays are used in multiplication and division as it shows a great visual to show how multiplication can be shown as repeated addition and division can be shown as fair shares.

The power in knowing about the communitative property is being able to point it out to your child.

The grocery store demsontrates a wealth of the communitative property of multiplication. Point it out when your shopping that you can look at arrays in two ways:

6 pack of soda :2 groups of 3 or 3 groups of 2

Eggs: 2 groups of 6 or 6 groups of 2

Many things in the bakery section of the grocery store comes in arrays.
