Multiplication Games

Multiplication Games that teach your child to:

Multiply by 0 and 1

0's- 0 x anything = 0

WARNING: this skill is very important as your child advances in math.

One possible conceptual way to think about multiplying by 0 it is to say, multiplying 2 * 100 is like having 2 groups of 100 cookies on the table. Multiplying 1 * 100 is like having 1 group of 100 cookies on the table. Multiplying 0 * 100 is like having no groups of 100 cookies on the table, hence no cookies at all.

Your child will most likely just need help identifying the 0 facts. When they get the hang of it try big numbers. Quick games can be: What is 66000 x 0? How about 1,000,000 x 0?

1's: 1 x anything = itself

This is super easy..of course. But don't forget that it can help build confidence in your child when they see they are successful.

The equation actually gives you the answer. Any number times one always equals itself. Try a few, first with small numbers.

WORTHY COMMENTS..

I have taught 6th grade for 9 years. Ready for my complaint? Kids don't have simple understandings in multiplication. Multiplying by 1 and 0 are very important as kids start algebra They need to know why multiplying by 1 means the number remains the same and why multiplying by 0 means you have nothing left.

You go parents!

Claire, 6th grade teacher

My 2 sons and I have been working on multiplication for a few months at night. I never realized that multiplying by 0 and 1 were so important until now. I have an older son who is taking pre algebra, he has had to review this same concept.

-Thanks for the suggestions, Sue
