Multiplication Games

Multiplication games to help your child learn to:

Multiply by 4

1. First, be sure your child understands the concept of multiplying by 4. They should understand they are adding groups of 4. Help point out and count things that come in 4's. For example, animal legs, wheels on a car, seasons....

2. This song really helps kids remember the pattern of 4:

Tune of: Row, Row, Row your boat:

4's

4,8,12,16 ( Mary had a little lamb)
20,24 (little lamb,little lamb)
27,32(Mary had a little lamb)

36 (thirrrrrtysix) let it drag out . (it's fleece was white as snow).

Once familiar with the song, you can hold up your fingers one for each number in the song. When I get to my fourth finger I am at 16 in the song....so 4x4 is 16.

3.When your child is comfortable counting by 4's, they will be ready for a strategy:

Doubling Once Doubling twice Strategy

For 3 × 4, 3 × 2 = 6 (double 6 for 12)
or

3 + 3 = 6 6 × 2 = 12

For 5 × 4, 5 × 2 = 10 (double 10 for 20)

or

5 + 5 = 10 10 × 2 = 20

For 8 × 4, 8 × 2 = 16 (double that for 32)

or

8 + 8 = 16 16 × 2 = 32

Another strategy is that while they are singing the song you can hold up your fingers one for each number in the song. When I get to my fourth finger I am at 16 in the the song....so 4x4 is 16.

Tips
Give your child lots of practice doing multiplication problems using the strategy they like best.

DON'T FORGET..... although multiplication is communicative (2x6=6x2) they look different in real life. For example, 2 six packs would be 6 x 2 while, 6 packs of Hostess cupcakes (come in 2's) would be 2 x 6.
